  1. Add the connector

  2. Confirm the name and URL

There is also an open-source Node.js package, @unusualwhales/mcp, that runs locally with npx and your UW_API_KEY. Most people should use the hosted server above — it is always up to date and needs nothing installed.

It says it cannot connect
Double-check the URL is exactly https://api.unusualwhales.com/api/mcp. The two common mix-ups are unusualwhales.com/public-api/mcp (this page) and mcp.unusualwhales.com, which is for signing in with your Unusual Whales account in ChatGPT, Claude and Grok (see AI apps), not for API keys. Then fully quit and reopen your client.
401 Unauthorized
Your API key is wrong or inactive. For header-based configs the value must read “Bearer YOUR_KEY” with a space. For URL-based clients (Claude connector, ChatGPT, Grok, Codex) the key rides along as ?token=YOUR_KEY — make sure nothing was trimmed when pasting.
The tools do not show up
Saving the config is not enough for most desktop apps — fully quit and reopen. In Cursor, check that the server toggle is on and shows a green dot. Also validate the JSON: a trailing comma silently breaks the whole file.
The Add to Cursor button did nothing
Your browser may have blocked the app link. Switch that client to the Config file tab above and paste the JSON by hand — it is the same result.
I already have other MCP servers in my config
Add the unusual-whales entry inside your existing “mcpServers” object, next to the servers already there. Do not nest a second mcpServers block.
429 Too Many Requests
The default limit is 120 requests per minute. Ask fewer things at once, or upgrade your API plan for higher limits.
